ABOUT

Donatella Alessandrini and Rosie HardingPECANS (Postgraduate and Early Career Academics Network of Scholars) is a network of research students and early career academics working in the fields of Law, Gender and Sexuality, broadly conceived! Anyone who would define themselves as either a research student or early career academic (up to around 5 years post-doc) is very welcome to join in with PECANS.

PECANS was founded by Rosie Harding, during the AHRC Research Centre for Law, Gender and Sexuality, which ran from 2004 - 2009 and involved a partnership between the Universities of Keele, Kent and Westminster. CentreLGS continues at the three partner institutions, and PECANS continues to benefit from the participation and support of CentreLGS academics and respources.

Between 2009 and 2011 PECANS was funded by the ESRC, under an international training and networking opportunities for early career scholars grant. This grant funded two international workshops, one hosted at the University of Westminster in spring 2010, and one hosted by the Centre for Feminist Legal Studies at UBC, Vancouver in summer 2011. During this time, PECANS also offered a number of visiting fellowships for graduate research students and early career academics, to support visits to CentreLGS@Kent and the GSL research group at Keele. This period also saw the establishment of a management committee to take a more active role in developing the network, and the re-launch of the PECANS website.

PECANS supports research students and early carrer scholars in a number of different ways: our events provide the opportunity to discuss new developments in the fields of law, gender and sexuality and to explore or present particular research projects. We also provide research students and early career academics with support and further information about the specific challenges or pitfalls faced by researchers and early carrer scholars working in law, gender and sexuality - whether it be preparing for the viva, seeking funding opportunities, or applying for a first academic post.

The PECANS website is host to two databases for early career scholars and doctoral students with research interests in the law, gender and sexuality field. The PECANS Directory is an online database of postgraduate research projects since 2004. If you are either a postgraduate research or early career academic working in the law, gender and sexuality field (broadly defined), do add your details to the research directory.

The ‘Find a Supervisor’ database is a list of established academics with research interests in the field, who are interested in supervising postgraduate and postdoctoral research. If you are interested in doctoral study, why not take a look so that you can find the right supervisor for you. All established scholars in the LGS field are warmly invited to add your details to the Find a Supervisor database.

Don't forget to check our events page regularly - we post information about our own events and other events relevant to postgraduate and early career scholars in the LGS field. If you are organising an event and would like your event information listed on this site, then please don't hesitate to contact Arturo Sanchez Garcia on A.Sanchez-Garcia@kent.ac.uk.

The resources section has a wealth of useful documents, video clips and web links for research students and early career academics.
